Q: Mattman, I have met you a few times at events and you always seem to have a lot of energy. What’s the deal? Are you drinking coffee all day while pretending to have a caffeine curfew?
A: Dear doubter, You are not the first and you will not be the last. I understand that it seems impossible for somebody to have as much energy as I do on a daily basis. I sometimes even surprise myself if I’m being honest. However, with knowledge from Shawn Stephenson’s book Sleep Smarter, I figured out an equation to being wide awake.
The pillars of health are diet, exercise, and sleep. Old school thinking used to be each of those pillars is equal. And let’s say you can score up to 5 points a day in each pillar. The equation looks like this on your best day: Diet + Exercise + Sleep = Healthy. As mathematical values: 5+5+5=15.
However, science now shows us these pillars are not weighted evenly. Sleep is a multiplier. The new equation looks like this: (Diet + Exercise) x Sleep = Healthy. As mathematical values:(5+5)x5=50! I call the healthy # my power level because it sounds cool!
If you don’t believe me, you should look at how many 40 year old people are throwing over the hill parties like they did in the 80’s and 90’s. 60 seems more like 40 than 40 does. Our modern world has been good to us! But don’t rely on supplements and pills for everything.
Even if you don’t have the greatest diet and exercise habits, let’s say you score a two in both, yet you sleep like a superhero, your equation looks like this:(2+2)x5=20.
