Q: Mattman, you mentioned you love making New Year’s resolutions. What did you do this year? And do you think you’ll stick to it?
A: Duuuuuuude! You’re darn right I love making New Year’s resolutions! What I don’t make is snooze-year resolutions. And I intend to leverage my sleeping habits to help me awaken my superhero ability to learn and adapt! When you know the science behind our brain and it’s relationship with sleep, learning new habits is not as difficult as you may expect.
I am calling 2023 the year of the viking! I intend to live like a warrior. A viking warrior! Viking’s love to explore, they look for treasure, and are always preparing themselves for the next battle! And so I too will align my character with those warriors of long ago. You see, last year I made a goal to run a 5k in my Matt-suit and cape in under 30 minutes. I got close but not quite there! However, this year living with the habits of a great warrior, I will choose fitness activities more often and prepare myself for the next 5k race where I do the proverbial battle with myself. And I believe I will run faster than 30 minutes. Much faster!
From the book Atomic Habits, I had made an easy mistake last year. I made my goal run 5k in under 30 minutes. Would I have been happy to run 29 minutes and 54 seconds? What if I stopped after I did that? I reread the book and now this year my goal is to have the habits of somebody who runs a fast 5k. Fitness three or four times a week! And I believe I will crush the 30 minute 5k speed.
And of course, there is a battle on the horizon! As I save sleep cycles with the nonprofit organization Dreams 4 All, the Sleeping Bandit(my arch nemesis) will have no choice but to confront me in person again and I will be ready!
